PARLIAMENT HILL – David Tilson, MP for Dufferin-Caledon rose in the house today to reintroduce his Private Members Bill that if enacted would designate the month of June as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) Month.
“As the issue is close to my heart I was please to stand up in the house today and reintroduce a bill that would honour those who are dedicated and work so hard to learn more about this disease in order to discover both the cause and cure,” Tilson stated.
This Bill will ensure the month of June shall be known as “ALS Month” throughout Canada each year.
ALS is a progressive and ultimately fatal neuromuscular disease that causes nerve cells to degenerate. The voluntary muscles weaken and become immobile. ALS leaves the senses unimpaired and the intellect is often unaffected. Two to three Canadians a day die of ALS.
“We are thrilled that the Member for Dufferin-Caledon, Mr. David Tilson, is reintroducing a Private Members Bill to increase awareness of this devastating disease that affects thousands of Canadians beyond the 3,000 people who live with it,” says David S. Cameron, National Executive Director of the ALS Society of Canada. “ALS is a rapidly progressive fatal disease and there is no known cure yet. Two to three Canadians die every day from this disease.”
