SUMMERSIDE, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND – Prime Minister Stephen Harper today participated in the opening ceremonies of the 2009 Canada Games, being held from August 15-29 at sites throughout Prince Edward Island.

“Since 1967, the Canada Games have evolved to become the premiere national competition for young Canadian athletes,” said the Prime Minister.  “Our government is proud to support these outstanding young Canadians as they pursue their dreams.”

The Canada Games bring together athletes from each Canadian province and territory in 20 sporting disciplines.  The Games encourage Canadian youth to reach their athletic potential and pursue personal excellence while learning the values of sportsmanship and ethical competition.  The Games rotate across the country and facilities built for the Games often serve as a sporting legacy for the host communities.

The Harper Government has made multiple investments to encourage physical activity among youth and to support Canadian athletes on the world stage.  These investments include the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit for families who enroll their kids in organized sports and major new investments, contained within Canada’s Economic Action Plan, for community recreational facilities and Canada’s National Trails system.

“This is Canada’s Olympic year.  Countless Canadian athletes who would later go on to represent our country at the Olympics or other elite international events received their first taste of national competition in the Canada Games,” said the Prime Minister.  “I congratulate all of the participants, coaches, families, organizers and volunteers who have worked so hard to make this event a success.  I hope all visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the unique hospitality, culture and natural beauty of Prince Edward Island during their stay.”
