Orangeville, ON- David Tilson, the Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, was visited in his Orangeville constituency office on May 19, 2011, by Robert F. Hall grade 12 teacher Jozef Konyari. Mr. Konyari met with Tilson to present him with a banner, as well as two petitions prepared and signed by grade 12 students and members of the greater school community of Robert F. Hall.

The banner, which was displayed at the school and as part of a rally held by Robert F. Hall students bears a message that demands an end to violence against women. The two petitions delivered to Tilson by Konyari on behalf of his students aim to spark debate about solutions to the problem of violence against women. “A vital part of the answer exists in the process of education and political engagement … [and] we must begin by identifying concrete solutions,” stated Konyari.

“It’s important that we have a dialogue to discuss various ideas,” said Tilson, on possible solutions to the issue. “We should definitely look at what seems to be working, and build on those successes,” he added, pointing to grassroots organizations such as Orangeville’s Family Transition Place, which serves as a model of support for women and children across the country.

“I will most certainly undertake to read the petitions in the House of Commons,” said Tilson. Both Tilson and Konyari are hopeful that an ongoing debate about concrete solutions to end violence against women will be sparked.
