August 20, 2021

ORANGEVILLE, ON- David Tilson, Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, was pleased to learn that the Ministry of Infrastructure and Communities and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has approved $46,400 in Green Municipal funding to the Town of Orangeville for its Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Plan.

The funding provided by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Communities and FMC will contribute to revamping the Town of Orangeville’s strategies and targets, moving them towards more sustainable practices for the future. This program will integrate environmental, economic, social, and cultural features, moving them towards the goals of a cleaner and healthier community.

“It is important for communities to respond to changing demands in the world”, stated Mr. Tilson. “Sustainability is an important goal for municipalities to reach for, and this funding will assist the Town of Orangeville plan, not only for the environment, but for the health of our community.”

One important aspect of the Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Plan will begin this fall: community outreach. Businesses, residents, and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to contribute to the town’s vision for the future. The final plan, set to be completed in June of 2019, will set measurable, realistic goals for the town to implement.

Councillor Sylvia Bradley, Chair of the Orangeville Sustainability Action Team (OAST), shared her excitement on the possibility this funding brings. “The development of a sustainability plan for Orangeville has been a goal of the Town’s OSAT committee for some time. The plan will help the Town work towards a cleaner, healthier community, with economic and lifestyle benefits for everyone.”

The FMC announced over $12.1 million in funding for 159 new initiatives across Canada. The Green Municipalities Fund (GMF) supports municipalities in their initiatives to solve environmental challenges they may be facing. The projects that the GMF promotes include those that improve air, water, & land quality, or reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The goal of the fund is to solve these environmental problems to bring economic and social benefits to the communities they are implemented in.
