Tilson tables petition calling for environmental assessment on melancthon quarry project

Ottawa, ON – David Tilson, Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, today tabled in the House of Commons the first of a series of petitions signed by people from all over Canada calling on the federal government to conduct an environmental assessment on the Melancthon quarry proposal.

“What started as an effort to gauge concern among residents of Dufferin-Caledon has taken on a life of its own” noted Mr. Tilson. “In addition to the many constituents of Dufferin-Caledon, we have folks from Vancouver to St. Johns who have signed this petition asking the federal government to get involved.”

Mr. Tilson began circulating a petition in Dufferin-Caledon calling for a federal environmental assessment of the mega-quarry earlier this summer. The petitions continue to come in. As the House of Commons resumed sitting for the fall session this week, Mr. Tilson took the earliest opportunity to table some of the names that have been returned.

With the Province of Ontario recently ordering an environmental assessment, Mr. Tilson last week wrote to federal Environment Minister Peter Kent to demand that the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency undertake a joint review of this massive project. The petition serves as a significant reinforcement to that call given the size and scope of the proposed project.
