Tilson Reintroduces an amendment to the Youth Criminal Justice Act
May 16, 2006

PARLIAMENT HILL – David Tilson, the Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, rose in the House of Commons yesterday to re-introduce a Private Members Bill, An Act to amend the Youth Criminal Justice Act (publication of information).

Mr. Tilson remarked in the House, “Mr. Speaker, as it stands now, the Youth Criminal Justice Act prevents the publication of young offenders to be released when they are sentenced after they have reached the age of 18.  This Bill, if passed, would allow for the publication of information about young offenders who are sentenced as adults.”

The ultimate purpose of this Private Members Bill is to authorize the publication of information and ensure that the public is made aware of age-of-majority criminals, who are tried and convicted in Youth Court.  “I believe that the public has a right to know the identity of ‘young offenders’ if they are sentenced after they have passed the age of majority.  I believe this knowledge will help protect all Canadians throughout the country,” remarked Tilson.
