MP David Tilson questions wisdom of Liberal “Spenders Conference”
March 29, 2010

PARLIAMENT HILL – David Tilson, Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, today challenged this weekend’s Liberal “Spenders Conference” during Question Period.

"Mr. Speaker, at the Liberal Spender’s Conference this weekend, all Liberals did was talk about higher taxes. They talked about a GST hike, they discussed reviving the carbon tax and now have an official plan to raise job-killing business taxes,” noted Mr. Tilson.  “Can the Minister of Finance tell the House how raising taxes harms Canada’s economy?”

News reports from this past weekend’s Liberal “Spenders Conference” gabfest in Montreal highlighted a lot of doom and gloom scenarios, according to Mr. Tilson.  Rather than set forward ideas for how to move Canada forward through the economic recovery and on to balanced budgets, as Finance Minister Jim Flaherty did three weeks ago with the 2010 Federal Budget, all the Liberals could come up with were ideas that involved raising taxes, killing jobs or both.

“The Finance Minister articulated a sound plan to solidify Canada’s economic recovery and to move towards balanced budgets in the medium term with Budget 2010,” Mr. Tilson said after Question Period.  “The best the Liberal big thinkers could dream up were business tax increases and a re-hashed carbon tax.  Canadians understand what kind of damage that would do to the economy.”
