
Addresses Assembly on Canadian actions to combat violence against women and children
STRASBOURG, FRANCE – On April 28th, David Tilson, Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, addressed the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg, on the international issue of gender-based human rights violations, including the abduction of women and girls.
Mr. Tilson addressed the Assembly on Canada’s actions to address this problem, “With regard to addressing the issue of gender based violence, the [Canadian] government has funded a range of community-based programming, including programs aimed at teaching girls leadership skills, knowledge of their rights on gender and racial equality, and others more specifically aimed at preventing violence.”
During his presentation, Mr. Tilson underscored the significance of Canadian programs targeted at this issue and more importantly, “They also send a clear message that multiculturalism and respect for religious diversity goes hand in hand with a commitment to fundamental human rights, to women’s rights and their full potential in society, and to the elimination of violence against women and girls.”
