BOLTON, ON – David Tilson, the Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, recently visited Caledon Central Public School, in Caledon Village, to receive 650 paper peace pinwheels prepared by Kindergarten to Grade 8 students in the school.
The project idea began with each of them constructing paper peace pinwheels with individual peace messages found inside of them. On Friday, November 9th, the school held a peace assembly and then arranged the pinwheels in the shape of a cross outside, where students and teachers paused for a moment of silence.
Following the remembrance ceremony, the students decided to send their peace pinwheels to Canadian troops currently stationed in Afghanistan. The students’ teacher, Ms. Debbie Walmsley, contacted Mr. Tilson’s constituency office asking for his assistance in ensuring the safe arrival of the pinwheels to the troops. On December 7th, Mr. Tilson traveled to the school, where 14 of the students presented the 650 pinwheels and explained their project to him.
Mr. Tilson spoke to the students and was quoted as saying, “Congratulations to all of you on your creative and unique idea. Each of you should be very proud of what you’ve accomplished and what it will mean to our troops in Afghanistan when they receive your thoughtful gestures. I commend you on a job well done!”
After his meeting with the students, Mr. Tilson arranged for the packages to be forwarded to the Canadian Forces Postal Service post office in Belleville, where they will be retrieved by the Canadian Forces Postal Unit located at Canadian Forces Base Trenton and then will be sent on to troops stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
