Our country’s seniors have built Canada and have made it the exceptional place it is to live and the envy of the world. We owe a debt of gratitude to this group for the many contributions they’ve made, as well as the wealth of knowledge and experience they can share with us. Our Government is committed to supporting seniors and to work hard to ensure that our policies, programs, and services are meeting – and will continue to meet – their needs. One way I have tried ensure that the needs of our senior community in Dufferin-Caledon are being met, is through annual Seniors Information Expos, which provide useful information on topics of interest to this group. This year, I’m pleased to be offering three expos across the riding during the month of November.

On Friday, November 4th, I will be co-hosting the annual Orangeville Seniors Information Expo with the Orangeville and District Senior Citizens’ Centre, which is located at 26 Bythia Street, in Orangeville. The Expo will begin at 10:00 a.m. and there will be four presentations on varying topics. The first topic on the program, “Plan Today – Stay Safe Tomorrow,” will provide an overview of actions seniors can take to prevent themselves from falling victim to elder abuse in the future. It will be presented by Angela Yenssen from The County of Dufferin. The second topic, “Understanding Arthritis,” will be presented by Lorna Catrambone from The Arthritis Society. “Financial Planning for Seniors” will follow, which will be presented by Gerry Hogenhout from Hogenhout & Associates Inc. The last topic on the program will be “Safe Meds for Seniors.” The presentation, by Sanjay Gandhi, from Rolling Hills Pharmacy will provide information on the safe use of medication from the Ontario Pharmacist’s Association. We are also very fortunate to have Egan Funeral Home kindly providing lunch. If you are interested in attending this Expo, please contact my Orangeville constituency office at 519-941-1832 or by e-mail at david.tilson.c1@parl.gc.ca.

The second Expo occurring in the riding next month will be in Bolton on Friday, November 18th. I will be co-hosting this event with the Caledon Seniors’ Centre, which is located at 7 Rotarian Way, in Bolton. It will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will include four topics on the program. The first topic will be “Banking and Financial Planning,” presented by Tammy Gallop from TD Waterhouse Financial Planning (Bolton). The second topic on the program is “Safe Medication Use,” presented by Yin Han Siow from Shoppers Drug Mart (Bolton). Next, Dr. Danielle Sinclair from Health First Wellness will present on “Nutrition and Health Problems” with a focus on health concerns such as: high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. The last presentation on the program will be “Income Security Programs,” presented by Fernanda Soukas, representing Service Canada. The Egan Funeral Home will also be providing a complimentary lunch for this Expo that will be served following the completion of the event. If you are interested in attending this Expo, please contact my Bolton constituency office at 905-857-6080 or by e-mail at david.tilson.c1a@parl.gc.ca.

The last Seniors Information Expo during the month of November will be on Friday, November 25th. I will be co-hosting this event with the Caledon Seniors’ Council. The Expo will take place at St. James Anglican Church (6029 Old Church Road), in Caledon East, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The first topic, “The Senior Driver,” will be presented by Bill Pollock, from Jetala Limited. The second topic, “Tax Information for Seniors,” will be presented by Kathleen Jackson, who will be representing the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
