David Tilson, M.P. announces new horizons funding for the Town of Orangeville
December 16, 2009
Orangeville, ON — David Tilson, Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, announced today that the Government of Canada will be providing $23,395 to the Town of Orangeville for its Computers for Seniors project, under the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). This will ensure that seniors residing in the Town of Orangeville will have the opportunity to participate and take an active leadership role within their community. The funding support, which has been delivered through the Community Participation and Leadership Funding component of the NHSP, will assist seniors in providing computer training to their peers, to decrease their social isolation and connect them to information, services, as well as family, friends, and others. “Seniors are valuable members of society who contribute a diversity of skills, knowledge and experience to their communities,” said Mr. Tilson. “Through the Community Participation and Leadership component of the New Horizons for Seniors Program, the Government of Canada is supporting local projects that enable seniors to contribute to their communities through social participation and active living.” “We are very excited to offer this program to the seniors in our community” said Councillor Rose, Chair of the Mayor’s Seniors’ Advisory Committee and Computers for Seniors program. “This training program will enable seniors to learn how to get connected using today’s technology.” The Community Participation and Leadership component of the NHSP encourages seniors to continue to play an important role in their communities by helping those in need, providing leadership, and sharing their knowledge and skills with others. The NHSP also includes two additional components — Capital Assistance and Elder Abuse Awareness— with an overall budget of now $35 million per year. Since its beginning, the New Horizons for Seniors Program has funded over 5,500 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada.
