Standing Up for Canadians

DAVID TILSON, MP for Dufferin-Caledon

Less than two months ago Canadians went to the polls in a federal election and awarded Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Government a strengthened mandate.

I was fortunate to be elected as one of the 143 Conservative Members of Parliament in that election.

It was a hard fought campaign – but it was a fair campaign. The people’s verdict was clear.  Conservatives did not win every vote we wanted to win, but we did clearly win all the same.  We won by far and away the most votes and the most seats.  We also had the strongest mandate.

Canadians gave us this strengthened mandate precisely because they trusted us to manage Canada’s economy during the current global financial crisis.

Since that time we have been busy: protecting lower taxes and ensuring that our financial system is strong enough to protect small business and homeowners.

We are delivering on the clear democratic mandate that Canadians provided us.

Yet today that democratic mandate is being threatened by a group of opposition politicians who believe they have the self-appointed right to overturn the wishes of the voters.

Fresh off being soundly rejected by the voters, Stéphane Dion and Jack Layton are trying to steal power through a backdoor so-called ‘coalition’.

In doing so, they will be handing power to the separatist Bloc Quebecois.  If the Liberals and NDP have their way, every decision made by the Government of Canada will be held hostage by a political party dedicated to the destruction of Canada.

This is unacceptable, undemocratic, and illegitimate.  The leaders of the Liberals and NDP are prepared to put Canada’s future at risk in order to further their lust for power.

To go over the head of voters with such coalition reveals a shocking contempt for voters from the leaders of the Liberals and NDP.

Canada is at risk of having its democratically elected government overthrown – without the voters having a say in the matter.

In a time of global economic crisis, Canadians would be stuck with a Lame Duck Liberal Prime Minister – whom neither the country, nor his own party supports.

Worse still, this Prime Minister would be at the mercy of a group of separatists dedicated to the destruction of our country.  Any Canadian politician that is prepared to provide real power to these people is an embarrassment to everything Canada stand for.

This is not just a political crisis.  It is an act of political madness that threatens to tear our country apart.

It is time for Canadians to stand up for Canada.

This means standing up for democracy and standing against secret deals.

This means standing up for stable economic leadership and against chaotic coalitions.

This means standing up against the separatists and all they represent.

Nobody wants another federal election so soon, but I am prepared to return to the voters of Dufferin-Caledon  to resolve this serious crisis.  Our party will always respect the democratic wish of Canadians.  What we will never accept is an illegitimate government that tries to seize power through the backdoor.

It is time to stand up for Canada.  It is time to let the people speak.
