Real Results for Canada’s North
August 18, 2021
In many ways, the North exemplifies those characteristics most strongly associated with Canada. Strength, resilience and seemingly boundless potential are on display when the world is seen right from the very top. Our Conservative government is continuing to take action to encourage that potential in Canada’s North. As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government is creating the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor). This agency will help Northerners to work with companies and organizations wishing to do business in the North, creating jobs and boosting local economies. At the same time, we are protecting Canada’s Northern sovereignty. With international attention focused on the wealth and strategic importance of our northern borders, we must remain vigilant against threats to the fragile arctic environment, to Canada’s economic interests and even to our national security. We are also working to improve quality of life for our northern residents through action like increasing the Northern Residents Deduction. This is in recognition that living up North brings expenses that Canadians who live further south don’t face. In addition, our government is investing $200 million over the next two years to build and upgrade social housing across the North. Canadians living in the North can continue to count on our Conservative government to take strong action to continue building Canada’s northern strength. |
